Iloilo extends ban on pork til June
Iloilo City Mayor Jerry P. Treñas on Thursday announced the extension of the ban on pork and pork-by products originating or processed from Luzon and countries positive of African swine fever (ASF) until June 2020.
Iloilo Governor Arthur Defensor Jr. issued an executive order on Oct. 21 last year, which imposed a 90-day ban on said products from the Rizal and Bulacan provinces in Luzon and from ASF-positive countries like Latvia, Poland, Romania, Russia, Ukraine, Luxembourg, Belgium, Bulgaria, Moldova, Vietnam, Cambodia, Myanmar, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, South Korea, and China.
The Iloilo province remains free of ASF. The Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO) is focusing its effort on the entry points to assure that the disease will not enter the province. Iloilo City serves as the main entry and exit of inter-regional convergence in Western Visayas through the Iloilo International Airport and Iloilo International Port in Loboc, Lapuz. Airport staff was increased at the start of 2020. The province has intensified its information dissemination to the public and hog growers.
Despite the ban extension, the PVO assured that the province would not run out of pork as they currently have a 200% surplus and has sources from Cebu and Cagayan.
